Open work visa changes: what they mean for you

Published by INZ: 24 February 2026

Immigration New Zealand has changed the employment conditions for open work visas from 20 April 2026. The aim is to make it clearer what work is allowed, and to help visa holders understand their rights and responsibilities.

Some open work visa holders can do any kind of work in New Zealand, including working for an employer, being self-employed, or running a business. This group includes many partner-based visas and post-study work visas.

Other open work visa holders must work for an employer, either under an employment agreement or a contract for services. This affects visas such as working holiday visas and several protection or asylum-related visas.

There are also limits that apply to all open work visa holders. You cannot employ other people through your own business, and you cannot provide, run, or invest in a business linked to commercial sexual services.

If you are on an open work visa, it is worth checking your conditions now so you know whether your current work is still allowed and whether any changes are needed before your next visa application.
