New post-study work options announced for graduates

Immigration New Zealand has announced two new post-study work options that will affect international students finishing their studies in New Zealand from late 2026. The changes are designed to make it easier for some graduates to stay and work, while also giving a shorter-term option for people whose qualification does not currently lead to a Post Study Work Visa.
A new Short Term Graduate Work Visa will give eligible graduates up to 6 months of open work rights so they can look for work and, where appropriate, move into an Accredited Employer Work Visa. This may help students who want time to secure a job after study, but it will not suit everyone because there are limits around qualification level, previous visas, and the timing of the application.
At the same time, Post Study Work Visa eligibility will expand to include some Graduate Diploma holders at level 7, as long as they also hold a bachelor’s degree and meet the study requirements. For students, this could mean a clearer path to gaining New Zealand work experience after study.
If you are studying now, or planning to study in New Zealand, it is worth checking how these changes may affect your long-term visa pathway.
