Skilled Migrant Category: August 2026 Changes
Published by INZ: 5 March 2026
Key updates for migrants and employers
Immigration New Zealand confirmed further Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) changes effective late August 2026. Highlights include two new residence pathways (Trades/Technician and Skilled Work Experience), simplified median wage rules, clarified qualification points (NZ quals get +1 point), and red/amber occupation lists to manage risk.
AEWV holders can extend up to 12 months for work experience (2027 rollout). Red list roles are excluded from new paths but may qualify via high wage (1.5x median) or degree routes.
For migrants: Check your occupation against upcoming lists and start tracking NZ work experience now.
For employers: Review roles for pathway eligibility—trades/technicians gain new options.
